Why
Generic vegetable oil — usually soybean or a blend — is a neutral-tasting fat that handles heat and carries no sodium. It is not an allergen concern for babies, though soybean-based oils are so highly refined that even soy-allergic children generally tolerate them; check with your allergist for a confirmed soy allergy. Nutritionally it is simply fat, so olive oil and other flavorful fats add more to a baby’s plate.
How to serve it safely
Use it for pan-frying pancakes, fritters and eggs, or greasing baking dishes — anywhere a neutral oil is handy. Rotate with olive oil and other fats so meals get varied fat profiles, and avoid reusing oil that has been deep-fried before.
Warning signs to watch for
Vegetable oil reactions are essentially unheard of. Greasy foods in quantity can loosen stools — moderate amounts as part of balanced meals avoid that.

Common questions
My baby has a soy allergy. Is vegetable oil okay?
Highly refined soybean oil contains almost no soy protein and is usually tolerated — but confirm with your allergist before making it a regular cooking fat.
Is canola the same as vegetable oil?
They overlap — many “vegetable oil” bottles are soybean or canola blends. For babies either is fine; see the canola oil page for specifics.
Should I avoid frying for babies?
Light pan-frying is fine; deep-fried food adds a lot of fat and little else, so keep that for occasional family meals rather than baby’s plate.
