Can babies eat whole nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews...)?
The age-by-age verdict
| Age | Verdict | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| 6–8 months | 🚫 No | Not at this age — keep it off the plate |
| 9–11 months | 🚫 No | Not at this age — keep it off the plate |

Why
Hard nuts are the textbook choking food: small, hard, irregular and perfectly airway-sized, and they can shatter into sharp fragments. The hazard lasts years, not months — this is one of the few foods flagged for children up to around age 5. None of this applies to smooth nut butters or finely ground nuts in food.
How to serve it safely
Skip whole nuts entirely for now. Use smooth nut butters thinned into oatmeal or yogurt, finely ground nuts in pancakes and bakes, or nut flours — you get the nutrition and the early-allergen exposure without the airway risk. Store nut bowls and snack mixes well out of reach.
Warning signs to watch for
Two separate things to watch: choking (silence, no cough, blue lips — act instantly) and tree-nut allergy (hives, swelling, vomiting, breathing difficulty), which can be severe on first exposure.
When to call for help
Choking with no cough or cry: start infant choking first aid and call 911 (US) immediately. Allergy signs involving breathing: emergency care now. If your baby has severe eczema, discuss nut introduction with your pediatrician first. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Is a chopped-nut topping on porridge OK for my 1-year-old?
Small hard fragments can still be inhaled. Ground nuts or smooth nut butter stirred in give the same nutrition with none of the fragment risk — whole and chopped nuts can wait until age 4–5 and older, per common guidance.
Which nuts count as tree nuts for allergy purposes?
Almonds, walnuts, cashews, pistachios, hazelnuts, pecans, macadamias, Brazil nuts and more. Peanut is a legume and is tracked separately — a child can be allergic to one and not the other.
Grandparents want to give my baby a walnut. How do I handle it?
A simple script works well: “the doctor has us keeping whole nuts until school age — we’ll take the nut butter version though!” Most relatives have simply never heard the choking statistics.
