Why
Toffee starts hard and turns tacky as it warms in the mouth, so it behaves like a hard candy that then sticks — the worst of both textures for a small airway. It is butter and sugar with nothing else, which makes it a pure added-sugar food. Babies have no safe serving of it.
How to serve it safely
No toffee before 12 months — not plain, not in chocolate bars, not crumbled on desserts. After the first birthday, occasional tiny softening pieces at a table are the reasonable limit. Keep hard toffee for much older children and adults.
Warning signs to watch for
Watch for silent choking, drooling or gagging if a piece sticks. Toffee also welds itself to new teeth — dentists count it among the worst for cavities.
When to call for help
If your child is choking and cannot cough or cry, start choking first aid and call 911 (US) immediately. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Is toffee harder or safer than caramel?
Harder — it begins like hard candy and then becomes sticky, so it carries both hazards in sequence. It is not a gentler step down from caramel.
Can toffee bits go in cookies or ice cream for a toddler?
The texture is broken up, so the choking risk drops, but the sugar does not. Occasional, after 12 months, in a small serving.
My baby licked a toffee and I took it away. Any harm?
No lasting harm from a brief lick. Just keep the pattern at zero until the first birthday.
