Why
Soy sauce is essentially fermented soybeans, wheat and a large amount of salt — a few drops can carry more sodium than a baby needs in a day. Young kidneys handle salt poorly, and early exposure to very salty flavors sets habits that are hard to reverse. It also contains soy and usually wheat, two top-8 allergens, so first introductions are better done through plain, controlled foods.
How to serve it safely
Before 12 months, flavor baby’s food with herbs, a little unsalted broth you control, or mild spices instead. After the first birthday, add a light drizzle at the table or use reduced-sodium versions in cooking, and keep the rest of that meal low in salt.
Warning signs to watch for
Watch for typical allergy signs at first exposure — hives, swelling of lips or face, vomiting — since soy and wheat are major allergens. Excess salt itself shows up over time, not in a single meal.
When to call for help
For hives, swelling, repeated vomiting or breathing difficulty, seek medical care urgently — breathing trouble is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Is tamari or coconut aminos lower in salt?
Tamari is usually similar in sodium to soy sauce; coconut aminos is noticeably lower and soy-free. Even so, all of them are adult condiments — keep any version minimal for babies.
Can my baby have food cooked in soy sauce if I rinse it?
No — the salt soaks in and rinsing does nothing. Order or cook baby’s portion separately without soy sauce in the first year.
My baby already eats tofu fine. Is soy sauce still a new allergen?
Soy sauce also contains wheat and concentrated fermented soy, so it is not automatically covered by tofu tolerance. Introduce it thoughtfully and watch for reactions after 12 months.
