Why
Oreos are a processed sandwich cookie: added sugar first on the label, refined wheat flour, and a cream center that is mostly sugar and fat. There is no nutritional argument for the first year, and the dry, crumbly cookie can form a pasty ball in a small mouth. The filling also contains milk-derived ingredients.
How to serve it safely
No Oreos before 12 months. After the first birthday, one cookie with a meal and a cup of water, rarely, is the workable ceiling. Twist-and-lick doubles the sugar-per-nutrition ratio — if it is served, serve it whole and small.
Warning signs to watch for
The relevant signs are allergy to wheat or milk: hives, vomiting, swelling. Dry cookie crumbs stuck high can cause coughing or drooling.
When to call for help
For hives, swelling, vomiting or breathing difficulty, contact your pediatrician — breathing trouble is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Are Golden Oreos or other flavors different?
Same sugar and refined flour base; flavors swap which allergens appear. The first-year answer is the same for every variety.
Do Oreos contain dairy?
Yes — the cream contains milk-derived ingredients, and the cookie may carry milk cross-contact. Check the label if dairy allergy is a concern.
My toddler wants Oreos daily. How do I handle it?
Keep them an occasional food you control, offered with meals rather than between them — and lean on fruit for the sweet slot most days.
