Why
Nutritional yeast is deactivated yeast sold as flakes or powder, prized for a savory, cheesy taste with no added sodium — a rarity among savory seasonings. It often supplies B vitamins, including B12 in fortified versions, which is useful in vegan diets. It is not related to baking yeast, causes no rising action, and allergy to it is uncommon.
How to serve it safely
Sprinkle a small amount over pasta, scrambled eggs, mashed vegetables or popcorn for older kids, or stir it into sauces for a cheesy note. Check the label if B12 content matters to your family’s diet, and store it dry and sealed.
Warning signs to watch for
Reactions to nutritional yeast are rare. As with any new food, first tastes deserve a watch for hives, swelling or vomiting — most babies show nothing at all.
When to call for help

Common questions
Does nutritional yeast contain MSG?
No added MSG — though yeast is naturally rich in glutamates, the same savory compounds found in tomatoes and cheese. That is the flavor, not an additive.
Can it replace cheese for a dairy-free baby?
It gives cheesy flavor but not cheese’s protein, fat or calcium — useful seasoning, not a nutritional substitute. Pair it with other calcium sources.
Is nutritional yeast the same as active dry yeast?
No — nutritional yeast is already deactivated and will not rise or ferment. Baking yeast is a different product and not a seasoning.
