Not before 12 months — jelly beans are small, round, hard-shelled and sticky inside, a near-perfect airway plug.

Why

A jelly bean is the size and shape of a young airway, with a firm shell that needs real chewing to break. Inside is a dense sugar paste that squashes rather than crumbles. That combination, plus pure added sugar, keeps jelly beans off the menu throughout the first year.

How to serve it safely

No jelly beans before 12 months. After the first birthday, a few beans at a table with supervision are physically manageable — but keep them rare, and never hand over the bag. Watch older siblings’ stashes; jelly beans are a common toddler-grab item.

Warning signs to watch for

Choking is often silent, with no cough or cry. Allergy is uncommon for plain jelly beans but check labels for milk, soy, wheat and dyes.

When to call for help

If your child is choking and cannot cough or cry, start choking first aid and call 911 (US) immediately. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

My 1-year-old swallowed a jelly bean whole. Is that OK?

If it went down without choking, it will pass through the gut — watch for normal breathing and eating afterwards. The danger is the airway, not the stomach.

When are jelly beans age-appropriate?

Physically, in the toddler years with supervision; many safety guides still group small round candies with choking risks until around age 4.

Are jelly beans gluten-free or allergen-free?

Depends on the brand — some contain wheat, milk or soy traces. Check the label rather than assuming.
