Why

Ripe guava is soft, fragrant and loaded with vitamin C, and it is rarely allergic. Its quirk is the seeds: dozens of small, genuinely hard pellets embedded in the flesh. In a mashed or strained puree they are a non-issue; in firm raw slices they add gritty hard bits a beginner’s mouth does not need.

How to serve it safely

Wait until the fruit yields to gentle pressure and smells intensely sweet, then mash the flesh or push it through a sieve to leave the seeds behind. Older, confident eaters can manage soft sliced guava — the seeds pass through harmlessly once chewing is established.

Warning signs to watch for

Gagging on hard seeds or firm flesh is the likely complaint; allergy is uncommon. Nothing about guava is poisonous.

When to call for help

For hives, swelling, vomiting or breathing trouble after eating, stop the food and contact your pediatrician — breathing difficulty is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Can my baby eat guava seeds?

Once chewing is established, the seeds pass through without trouble. For 6- to 8-month-olds, mash and strain — hard little pellets are a mouthful a beginner does not need.

Is guava skin edible for babies?

On ripe fruit the thin skin is soft and fine; some babies dislike its slight bitterness. Peel if you prefer.

My guava is rock hard. What now?

It will ripen on the counter within days. For today, you can cook firm guava down soft — it makes a lovely sauce or puree.
