Why

Ripe avocado is smooth and squishy, needs no cooking, and brings the kind of fat that growing brains use. Allergies to avocado are uncommon. The only real consideration is that it browns after cutting — harmless, but it can look unappetizing.

How to serve it safely

For beginners, offer a ripe wedge with the skin off — big enough to grip in a fist with the top sticking out — or mash it onto a preloaded spoon, into oatmeal or onto toast strips. A squeeze of lemon slows browning (fine for babies as flavor, though skip honey-based dressings entirely before 12 months).

Warning signs to watch for

Avocado allergy is rare; if it occurs it looks like any food allergy — hives, vomiting, swelling. Babies with latex allergies are somewhat more likely to react to avocado.

When to call for help

For hives, swelling, vomiting or breathing trouble after eating, stop the food and contact your pediatrician — breathing difficulty is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Can avocado be a baby’s very first food?

Yes — it is a classic baby-led weaning starter because a ripe wedge is soft, self-feeding friendly and nutrient-dense. Mashed avocado works just as well for spoon-feeding.

The avocado turned brown — can my baby still eat it?

Browning is simple oxidation, not spoilage. Scrape off the brown layer if you prefer the look; underneath the avocado is fine as long as it smells and tastes normal.

Is avocado a choking risk?

Ripe avocado is about as low-risk as finger foods get. The exception is avocado that is still firm — wait until it yields to gentle pressure.
