Why
Despite the name and fruit pictures, most packaged fruit snacks are juice, sugar, gelatin and starch — gummy candy with better marketing. The texture is sticky and springy, the same choking profile as gummy bears, and the sugar is concentrated. Real fruit does everything these snacks claim, minus both problems.
How to serve it safely
No fruit snacks before 12 months. After the first birthday, if they appear at parties or in gift bags, cut each piece small and serve at a table with a drink — never in the car, stroller or crib. Keep actual fruit as the everyday version.
Warning signs to watch for
Choking may be silent — no cough or cry — or show as drooling and gagging. Sticky pieces also cling to new teeth, which dentists flag for cavities.

Common questions
Are 100% fruit snacks different?
Even pure-fruit versions are sticky and concentrated — closer to dried fruit than fresh. The texture caution survives the better ingredient list.
Why not just give raisins or dried fruit instead?
Dried fruit is sticky too and needs the same table-and-supervision rules; fresh soft fruit is the everyday answer.
My toddler eats fruit snacks daily. How do I shift?
Swap the slot, not just the product — offer cut fruit or plain yogurt with berries at the same time of day, and let the snacks become a rare item.
