Why
Donuts are deep-fried dough with a sugar glaze or coating — a double dose of added sugar and refined flour, plus frying fat. Texture adds a wrinkle: a cake donut is dry and crumbly, while a yeast donut is chewy and springy, and glazed tops can turn tacky. Neither profile is ideal for a new chewer, and neither belongs in year one.
How to serve it safely
No donuts before 12 months. After the first birthday, serve a piece of soft, plain-glazed donut with a drink at a table, occasionally. Skip hard sugar coatings, crumbled toppings and filled varieties with sticky centers until children are older.
Warning signs to watch for
Watch for coughing or quiet gagging with dry cake-donut crumbs or sticky glaze. Allergy signs trace to wheat, milk and egg in the dough: hives, vomiting, swelling.
When to call for help

Common questions
Is a baked donut healthier for a toddler?
Baking removes the fryer fat but not the sugar and refined flour — better, still occasional.
My 11-month-old grabbed a donut hole. Now what?
Watch for choking on the round shape first, then for any reaction. Return to the no-added-sugar pattern; one grab is not a crisis.
Are donut holes a choking hazard?
Yes — small, round and springy is a classic plug shape. Cut them in pieces rather than handing one over whole.
