Why
Curry pastes are concentrated blends of fresh chilies, aromatics, salt and frequently shrimp paste or fish sauce, which makes them hot, salty and shellfish- or fish-allergen-bearing all at once. A spoonful seasons a whole pot, so even a mild-looking curry can carry real capsaicin. Unlike mild curry powder, pastes are built for adult-level intensity and belong late in a child’s spice journey.
How to serve it safely
Before 12 months, cook baby’s portion from the aromatics before the paste goes in — coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger and mild spices create the vibe without the burn. After the first birthday, use a small amount of the mildest paste in a coconut-heavy, family-style curry, and check labels for shrimp and fish ingredients if those are new foods.
Warning signs to watch for
Watch for shellfish or fish allergy signs if the paste contains shrimp paste and those foods are new — hives, swelling, vomiting, breathing difficulty. Spice overload shows as crying at the table, drooling and tummy upset.
When to call for help
For hives, swelling, repeated vomiting or any breathing difficulty, seek emergency care immediately (911 in the US) — shellfish reactions can be severe. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Is green, red or yellow paste mildest for kids?
Yellow is typically the gentlest and green the hottest, but every brand differs — for young children, homemade mild paste or a pinch of curry powder is the safer route.
What is shrimp paste and why does it matter?
It is fermented ground shrimp used for depth of flavor in many pastes — which makes the dish a shellfish exposure, a top-8 allergen worth knowing about before serving.
Can I dilute curry paste with coconut milk for a baby?
After 12 months, a very small amount of mild paste in plenty of coconut milk is the workable approach — before that, keep the paste out of baby’s bowl entirely.
