Why

Crackers span a range: thin rice-cracker-style wafers that melt, versus dense wheat crackers that crack into firm, edged fragments. The second kind is a documented choking shape for beginners. Many crackers are also salty and refined, which makes them a snack with little to offer beyond convenience. Toppings rescue both the texture and the nutrition.

How to serve it safely

Choose thin, plain crackers that dissolve easily, top them with soft cheese, mashed avocado or thinned nut butter so the bite is moist, and keep your baby seated and watched. Break larger crackers into smaller pieces for beginners. Check labels for added sugar, honey and salt — baby crackers are not automatically better.

Warning signs to watch for

Silent choking is the risk to respect — no cough or cry means act, not watch. Wheat is the allergen to track: hives, swelling, vomiting.

When to call for help

If your baby is choking and cannot cry or cough, start infant choking first aid and call 911 (US) straight away. For allergy signs, contact your pediatrician. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Are baby crackers (teething biscuits) better?

They are designed to dissolve, which is safer in principle — but check sugar and salt, and stay nearby. A soft vegetable stick often does the same job.

When can my baby eat regular crackers?

Once chewing is confident and eating happens seated and supervised — often late in the first year — and even then, moistened with a topping.

Why do crackers get so much salt?

Salt carries their flavor, since a plain cracker has little else going on. The label tells you in one glance whether it belongs on the snack list.
