Can babies eat cow's milk (as a drink)?

Why
Before 12 months, cow’s milk as the main drink falls short on iron and can irritate the gut lining, quietly causing blood loss — breast milk or formula should remain the main drink. That restriction is about drinking milk instead of formula, not about dairy altogether: whole-milk yogurt, cheese and milk in recipes are standard first-year foods.
How to serve it safely
Keep breast milk or formula as the drink through the first year. Use whole-milk products freely in food — plain full-fat yogurt, cheese in meals, milk in porridge or pancakes. From 12 months, whole cow’s milk can become the main drink, and it should be whole (full-fat), not skim.
Warning signs to watch for
Milk protein allergy is one of the more common infant allergies: look for mucus or blood in stools, persistent reflux or vomiting, hives, or eczema flares after dairy. Lactose intolerance in babies is rare.
When to call for help
For blood in stools, repeated vomiting, hives or breathing trouble after dairy, contact your pediatrician promptly — breathing difficulty is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. Ask before switching formula on your own. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Can I cook my 8-month-old’s oatmeal with cow’s milk?
Yes — milk used in cooking or porridge is food, not the main drink, and that is perfectly fine from 6 months. The rule only applies to milk as a bottle or cup drink replacing formula.
Why is whole milk fine at 12 months but not at 10?
By the first birthday the kidneys and gut are more mature, and by then milk is replacing formula in a diet already rich in iron-containing solids — the exact combination that makes early milk drinking a problem is gone.
What about toddler formulas or follow-on milk?
For most healthy toddlers, plain whole milk plus a varied diet covers it, and specialist guidance generally does not favor follow-on formulas. It is worth a quick conversation with your pediatrician rather than a default purchase.
