Why

Cheese brings calcium, fat and protein in a self-feeding format babies love, and pasteurized varieties are safe from the start of solids. The cautions are three: unpasteurised and mould-ripened cheeses (brie, camembert, blue cheese) can carry listeria; many cheeses are salty; and round, firm cubes can be a choking shape.

How to serve it safely

Offer pasteurized, full-fat, lower-salt cheeses — mozzarella, mild cheddar, cream cheese, ricotta. Cut into strips longer than a finger for gripping rather than cubes, grate over vegetables, or melt into eggs and pancakes. Avoid brie, camembert, blue cheese and anything labelled unpasteurised or raw-milk.

Warning signs to watch for

Dairy allergy signs: hives, vomiting, swelling, blood or mucus in stools. Because cheese is salty, excessive amounts overall are not helpful — there is no acute reaction to watch for beyond allergy.

When to call for help

For hives, swelling, repeated vomiting or breathing trouble after cheese, seek medical care — breathing difficulty is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Why avoid brie and camembert for babies but cheddar is fine?

Mould-ripened and blue cheeses carry more listeria risk, and listeria hits small bodies much harder. Hard pasteurized cheeses are among the safest dairy choices.

Is cheese too salty for babies under 1?

Cheese does contain salt, which is why lower-salt varieties are preferred and it should be one food among many — not the largest item on the plate. There is no need to eliminate it.

Can my 7-month-old have cheese cubes?

Small firm cubes are a choking shape for beginners. Cut strips (longer and thicker than a finger) or grate — both are much easier to manage.
