Why

Caramel’s texture is the problem: chewy and adhesive, it can stretch across and seal a small airway the way thick nut butter can. It is also concentrated added sugar, which has no place before the first birthday. Soft does not mean safe — sticky soft is a distinct hazard.

How to serve it safely

No caramel before 12 months in any form — candies, sauces, in chocolate bars. After the first birthday, keep it to occasional small soft pieces at a table, with a drink alongside. Skip the firm, chewy caramels entirely until children are older.

Warning signs to watch for

A lodged piece may cause silent choking, drooling or gagging rather than loud coughing. Caramel also clings to new teeth, which dentists flag for cavities.

When to call for help

If your child is choking and cannot cough or cry, start choking first aid and call 911 (US) immediately. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Is caramel sauce on ice cream safer than caramel candy?

Somewhat — a thin sauce spreads instead of plugging. The sugar rule still applies: it waits until after 12 months, and then sparingly.

Can my baby have caramel in a chocolate bar?

Not before the first birthday, and after that rarely — the bar combines caramel’s stickiness with chocolate’s sugar and milk allergen.

When is chewy caramel okay?

Firm chewy caramels are best left until children can reliably chew and swallow them — many guides say around age 4. Soft versions can come earlier in small bites.
