Why

A brownie is chocolate dessert at its densest: added sugar, butter, chocolate and refined flour, with nothing a first-year diet needs. The texture is actually friendly to new chewers — soft and yielding — but the sugar and chocolate rules still push it past the first birthday. Nut-topped varieties add a real allergen and texture hazard.

How to serve it safely

No brownies before 12 months. After that, a small soft square, plain and nut-free, with a meal and a drink, occasionally. Cut pieces small, and skip versions with hard chocolate chunks, nuts or a crisp edge for the youngest toddlers.

Warning signs to watch for

Allergy signs trace to wheat, milk, egg or nuts in the recipe: hives, vomiting, swelling. Dense sticky bites can cause quiet gagging in new chewers.

When to call for help

For hives, swelling, vomiting or breathing difficulty, contact your pediatrician — breathing trouble is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Are blondies any different for babies?

Same sugar-and-butter base without the cocoa — the verdict does not change, only the flavor.

Is a brownie a choking risk?

Plain soft brownie is low-risk by dessert standards; the exceptions are nuts, hard chunks and very dense, sticky batches.

My toddler had a brownie at a party. Do I need to balance it out?

No — one brownie at a party is fine. Just keep the everyday pattern fruit-first and let desserts stay occasional.
