Why
Balsamic vinegar is acidic like other vinegars but also carries natural grape sugars, and commercial balsamic glaze concentrates those sugars into a syrup. For babies the acidity is the mild concern in small cooked amounts; the glaze is effectively a candy drizzle. Neither is dangerous in a taste, but neither earns a place on a baby’s regular plate.
How to serve it safely
Before 12 months, if you use balsamic at all, simmer a small splash into roasted vegetables or meat for the family and serve baby’s portion from that. Skip glazes and vinaigrettes for babies, and keep dressings for the adults’ plates.
Warning signs to watch for
Redness around the mouth after tangy dishes is typically acid irritation rather than allergy. Watch for true allergy signs — hives, swelling, vomiting — as with any new food.

Common questions
Is balsamic vinegar sweeter than regular vinegar?
Yes — it is made from grape must, so it has natural sugars along with the acidity. Glazes add even more, often with extra sweetener.
Can my baby have tomatoes drizzled with balsamic?
A tiny drizzle on a shared family dish is unlikely to matter, but for baby’s own portion, plain or lightly olive-oiled tomatoes are the better call before 12 months.
Is aged balsamic better for babies?
Age makes it smoother and pricier, not more suitable — babies neither need nor particularly benefit from any vinegar. It is an adult flavor to build up to.
