Why
A fully ripe apricot is soft enough to mash between fingers and mild in flavor, making it a friendly early fruit that is rarely allergic. Underripe apricots are firmer and more tart but still manageable once softened. The round, hard pit is the only real hazard.
How to serve it safely
Wait for fruit that yields to gentle pressure, then halve, pop out the pit, and offer wedges, mashed flesh, or briefly steamed slices if the fruit is firm. Apricots cook down quickly into a smooth puree if you want a spoon-fed option.
Warning signs to watch for
Choking risk comes from firm, underripe fruit; allergy is uncommon. Swallowing a whole pit is a choking concern rather than a poisoning one.
When to call for help
If your baby is choking and cannot cough or cry, start infant choking first aid and call 911 (US) immediately. For hives, vomiting or breathing trouble after eating, contact your pediatrician. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
My baby grabbed an apricot pit — what now?
Remove it calmly and watch for coughing, drooling or gagging. A pit is mainly a choking hazard; if you suspect one was swallowed and your baby seems unwell, call your pediatrician.
Are dried apricots just as good?
Not for babies — dried apricots are leathery and chewy, a different safety profile entirely. Soften and puree them if you want the flavor; see our dried apricots page for details.
Why are store apricots so hard?
They are picked firm for shipping and ripen slowly on the counter. A paper bag speeds it up, or steam firm slices the same day.
