Why
Turnip cooks into a soft, gently sweet flesh with fiber and vitamin C, and allergies are rare. Young turnips are milder; large mature ones get sharper and woodier. Raw turnip is dense and sharp-tasting, with none of the softness babies need — there is simply no reason to serve it raw.
How to serve it safely
Peel and steam, boil or roast until a fork slides through easily, then mash, puree or cut into soft pieces. Choose small, firm turnips for the mildest flavor. Skip raw slices, and skip pickled turnip, which brings salt into the picture.
Warning signs to watch for
Turnip allergy is very rare. Beyond possible mild gas from cruciferous family ties, expect nothing dramatic from cooked turnip.
When to call for help
For hives, vomiting or breathing trouble after eating, stop the food and contact your pediatrician — breathing difficulty is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Turnip or potato — which is better for babies?
Both cook soft and mild; turnip adds cruciferous-family nutrients to the rotation. There is no loser — variety across the week beats picking one winner.
Can babies eat raw turnip grated?
No — raw turnip is too hard and sharp-tasting for beginners. Cooked soft is the only form worth serving in the first year.
Why does turnip taste bitter sometimes?
Large, mature or long-stored turnips develop sharper flavor. Buy small and firm, and cook thoroughly — roasting also sweetens them considerably.
