Why

Smoked salmon is not cooked — it is cured with salt, sometimes cold-smoked at temperatures that never make it safe, which is why it shares listeria warnings with unpasteurized products. The salt load is far above baby-appropriate levels, and the silky, chewy strips are an awkward texture for beginners. No preparation at home changes any of this.

How to serve it safely

Keep smoked salmon off the under-1 menu in every form — on bagels, stirred into scrambled eggs at the end, on canapés. After the first birthday, small occasional pieces are the realistic ceiling, and fully cooked fresh salmon is the everyday fish. Baking it into a cooked dish addresses the raw side, but the salt remains the binding problem.

Warning signs to watch for

Listeria illness in a baby can look like fever, poor feeding and unusual drowsiness — rare but serious. The salt concern is chronic, not acute.

When to call for help

Common questions

Does cooking smoked salmon make it baby-safe?

Baking it through addresses the raw-fish and listeria side, but the salt is baked in, not out — so it still fails the under-1 test. Fresh salmon does the same job cleanly.

Is cold-smoked different from hot-smoked?

Hot-smoking actually cooks the fish, making it safer on the raw front, but both styles are heavily salted. Neither belongs on the baby menu before a year.

My 10-month-old had a bite on a bagel. Now what?

One bite is not a crisis — watch for fever or unusual sleepiness over the following days and mention it at your next visit if you are uneasy.
