Yes — fully cooked quail works from 6 months, but the bird is full of tiny bones: meat comes off the bone first, every time.

Why

Quail is a small game bird with fine-textured, mildly flavored meat and useful iron — a legitimate early protein. The distinguishing hazard is skeletal: quail carries many small, brittle bones through the breast and legs, far harder to detect than a chicken bone, and a cracked-off fragment is a real airway object. Deboning is the entire safety task.

How to serve it safely

Cook quail fully through, then strip the meat from every bone before it reaches the baby — never hand over a whole or halved bird to gnaw, and check shreds twice for fragments. Chop the meat fine or mix into soft dishes. If you roast quail for the family, do the bone work on your plate, not the baby’s.

Warning signs to watch for

A swallowed bone fragment triggers gagging, drooling or refusal to eat rather than silence at first — take it seriously either way. Quail allergy is rare; hives or vomiting would be the usual signs.

When to call for help

If your baby gagged on or swallowed a bone fragment and is drooling, uncomfortable or refusing food afterward, contact your pediatrician. Choking with no cough or cry: 911 (US) immediately. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Why all the bone fuss when chicken is fine?

Chicken bones are few and large and easy to avoid; quail bones are numerous, small and woven through the meat. Same rule, harder execution.

Quail eggs too, while we are here?

Fully cooked quail eggs are fine from 6 months — same egg rules as chicken eggs, which are a top-8 allergen. The bird and the eggs are separate topics.

Is game meat generally OK for babies?

Fully cooked, deboned, unseasoned game meat is fine, and venison is a solid red-meat option. Bones and heavy seasoning are where game preparations go wrong for babies.
