Why
Prune juice has the best reputation of any juice because of its gentle laxative effect, but it does not escape the first-year juice rule: it is concentrated sugar without fiber, and it displaces milk feeds just like apple or grape juice. Whole pureed prunes give the same sorbitol-rich benefit with the fiber intact, which is why the fruit form is preferred for babies. Constipation itself is a reason to call the pediatrician, not to self-dose juice.
How to serve it safely
Before 12 months, use pureed prunes as a food rather than prune juice as a drink — and loop in your pediatrician if constipation is persistent. After the first birthday, small amounts of prune juice in a cup are acceptable when a gentle helper is useful, but it is a short-term tool, not a daily beverage, and dosing questions belong with your doctor.
Warning signs to watch for
Watch for loose stools and diaper rash if prune juice becomes routine — signs it is doing more laxative work than intended.
When to call for help
If your baby is constipated — hard stools, pain, or fewer bowel movements than usual — call your pediatrician before reaching for juice. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
How much prune juice for my constipated 6-month-old?
Do not dose it yourself — for infants, constipation management belongs with your pediatrician, and the food form (pureed prunes) is generally the preferred route anyway.
Is prune juice healthier than apple juice for babies?
It has more useful compounds, but it is still juice: sugar without fiber, off the menu as a drink before 12 months. The puree is the better form.
Can prune juice become a daily drink for my toddler?
It works better as a short-term helper than a fixture — a daily laxative drink can create dependence on it. If constipation keeps returning, that is a pediatrician conversation.
