Why
Leeks bring gentle allium flavor plus vitamins and prebiotic fiber, and allergies are rare. Their one practical quirk is dirt: layers trap soil and grit between the leaves, so washing matters. Raw leeks are as harsh as raw onion and have no place in baby food.
How to serve it safely
Slice leeks lengthwise and fan them under running water to flush grit from between layers, then cook until completely soft — sauteed, braised or into soups and purees. Chop small so the layered texture is manageable. Only the white and light-green parts are worth serving; the dark tops are tough.
Warning signs to watch for
Leek allergy is very rare. Watch for the standard signs after any new food — hives, vomiting, swelling — and otherwise expect a mild, well-tolerated vegetable.
When to call for help
For hives, vomiting or breathing trouble after eating, stop the food and contact your pediatrician — breathing difficulty is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Can leeks replace onions in baby purees?
Yes — they are milder and sweeter than onions, making them an easy first allium. Cook soft, wash well, and chop small.
Why do leeks feel gritty even after rinsing?
Soil hides deep between the leaf layers. Slice lengthwise, fan open and rinse under running water — or soak cut rings and swish — before cooking.
Can babies eat raw leek in salads?
No — raw leek is pungent, tough and hard to digest. Cooked-soft is the rule for the whole first year and beyond.
