Yes for older babies — but kidney beans are large and firm, so for beginners they need thorough cooking and a good mash.

Why

Kidney beans are among the largest and firmest common beans, and a whole one is a real project for a six-month-old’s gums. They also must be boiled thoroughly from dried — undercooked dried kidney beans contain natural compounds that cause vomiting and diarrhea, which is why soak-and-simmer from scratch matters. Slow cookers alone do not get hot enough to do this job.

How to serve it safely

If cooking from dried, soak and then boil vigorously until completely soft — they should squish with no resistance. For beginners, mash or blend into purees, chili-style stews and rice; flatten any whole beans you offer. Canned kidney beans are already fully cooked — rinse and mash them.

Warning signs to watch for

Eating undercooked kidney beans can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea within a few hours. Choking on a whole firm bean looks like silence — no cough, no cry.

When to call for help

If your baby has persistent vomiting or diarrhea after beans, call your pediatrician. If your baby is choking and cannot cry or cough, start infant choking first aid and call 911 (US) straight away. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Are canned kidney beans safe straight away?

Canned beans are fully cooked, so the undercooking concern only applies to dried beans you prepare yourself. Rinse canned beans, then mash for young babies.

Why caution at 6–8 months but safe later?

It comes down to size and firmness. A large, dense bean is hard work for brand-new eaters; by 9 months most babies manage flattened or well-mashed beans easily.

Can I cook kidney beans in a slow cooker?

Not safely from dried — slow cookers may never reach a temperature that fully destroys the natural compounds in raw kidney beans. Boil them on the stovetop, or use canned.
