Why
Hemp hearts are softer than most seeds and not a top-8 allergen, and they bring protein and beneficial fats. They are, however, many tiny round objects, which is inherently a scattered, fiddly texture for a brand-new eater. Stirred into wet foods or blended into purees, they disappear into the meal.
How to serve it safely
Stir hemp hearts into oatmeal, yogurt, purees and smoothies where they cling and are swallowed with the food, or blend them into sauces for a smoother texture. Avoid pouring loose seeds onto dry foods where they roll off and scatter. Note that hemp foods contain no meaningful intoxicating compounds.
Warning signs to watch for
Hemp allergy is uncommon; watch for the usual hives, swelling or vomiting with any new food. The seeds are soft, so gagging rather than true choking is the likely response to stray seeds.
When to call for help
For hives, swelling, vomiting or breathing difficulty after eating, stop the food and contact your pediatrician — breathing trouble is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Do hemp seeds have any effect on babies?
Hemp foods sold for eating contain negligible amounts of any intoxicating compounds — they are a plain seed nutritionally, closer to a soft sunflower seed than anything else.
Hemp hearts or hemp protein powder?
Hearts — they are the whole seed, minimally processed. Save protein powders of any kind for much later in life; babies do not need them.
Can I blend hemp seeds into a smoothie for my 7-month-old?
Yes — blended into yogurt, puree or a smoothie served by spoon, the texture concern mostly disappears. Sip-thin smoothies are better kept for older babies.
