Why

Gripe water is sold as a fussiness remedy, but formulas vary widely between brands — some contain sodium bicarbonate, herbal extracts, sugars or even alcohol in old recipes — and none of it is tested like a medicine. Evidence that it works for colic or gas is weak, and giving any supplement to a young infant is a decision that deserves medical input. It is also, importantly, not a food.

How to serve it safely

Do not give gripe water to your baby on your own initiative — ask your pediatrician first, and if you do use an approved product, follow that product’s directions exactly and check the ingredient list for sugars, bicarbonate and herbs. Never use it as a regular drink, never give it to newborns without medical advice, and stop and report any reaction. For persistent fussiness, the pediatrician visit matters more than the bottle.

Warning signs to watch for

Reactions to gripe water can include rash, vomiting, worsening tummy upset or unusual sleepiness — and it can mask a real problem that needs a doctor’s eyes.

When to call for help

If your baby reacts badly after gripe water, or fussiness is intense and constant, contact your pediatrician. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Is gripe water safe for a 1-month-old?

Not without medical guidance — very young infants are the most sensitive to unregulated supplements. Any remedy for a newborn’s fussiness should start with your pediatrician.

My baby seemed better after gripe water — does that prove it works?

Colic and gas naturally come and go, which is exactly why weak evidence is hard to interpret. Improvement after a dose is not proof, and the ingredients still deserve scrutiny.

Alcohol in gripe water — really?

Some traditional formulas contained it, and some countries have pulled such products — which is why reading the label and asking your pediatrician before buying is the safe route.
