Why
Frying wraps good fish in a salted, oil-soaked crust that shatters into sharp fragments — hard on beginner mouths and a dilution of the nutrition you chose fish for. The fish inside is usually a low-mercury white fish, so nothing here is forbidden territory; it is a preparation problem, not an ingredient one. Hence caution at every age rather than a ban.
How to serve it safely
If fried fish appears, strip or cut around the heaviest batter for the baby’s share, serve the soft flaked fish inside, and keep portions small with plenty of vegetables alongside. For the regular rotation, bake, steam or pan-cook plain fillets until they flake, deboned and unseasoned. Introduce fish deliberately as an allergen in whichever form comes first.
Warning signs to watch for
Fish allergy signs: hives, swelling, vomiting, rarely breathing difficulty. Crunchy batter fragments trigger noisy gagging more often than silent choking, but choking shows as silence and no effective cough.
When to call for help

Common questions
Fish and chips for the family — can baby join?
Flake the fish out of its batter, skip the salt and vinegar, and add soft potato — a workable baby plate from a family meal. The battered exterior stays with the adults.
Is air-fried battered fish better?
Less oil, same batter — a real improvement, and with an unsalted homemade coating it becomes genuinely baby-friendly after 12 months.
Does frying destroy the omega-3s?
Some are lost and the calorie load rises; baking and steaming preserve more. For white fish it matters little — the omega-3 stars are salmon and sardines anyway.
