Ground, yes — whole flaxseeds pass through undigested and are pointless anyway; grind or buy pre-ground and stir into soft foods.

Why

Flaxseeds are tiny, hard and smooth — the small-round-seed profile that calls for care around young babies — and whole seeds also survive digestion intact, delivering little. Ground flax is a different food entirely: it blends invisibly into purees and bakes, adds fiber and plant omega-3s, and poses no texture problem. Flax is not a top-8 allergen.

How to serve it safely

Use pre-ground flaxseed or grind whole seeds in a spice grinder, then stir a spoonful into oatmeal, yogurt, purees, pancakes or muffin batters. Store ground flax in the fridge — it goes stale faster than the whole seed. Skip whole seeds entirely for babies.

Warning signs to watch for

Flax allergy is rare; watch the usual hives, swelling or vomiting with any new food. The fiber can loosen stools if introduced in large amounts — start small.

When to call for help

For hives, swelling, vomiting or breathing difficulty after eating, stop the food and contact your pediatrician — breathing trouble is an immediate 911 (US) emergency. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Why bother grinding flax if babies swallow things whole anyway?

Two reasons: whole flaxseeds are hard little round objects that can be gagged on, and they pass through undigested, so the nutrition never arrives. Ground flax fixes both.

Can flax cause any digestive trouble for babies?

Its fiber is genuinely effective — large amounts can loosen stools. Start with small spoonfuls in one meal a day and scale up as your baby adjusts.

Is flax oil a good alternative?

Flax oil provides omega-3s but none of the fiber, and it spoils quickly. Ground flax in food is the more useful everyday form.
