Why

Most roe served as food — caviar, ikura, tobiko on sushi — is salt-cured, which puts its sodium far beyond anything a baby needs, and the loose bead texture is an unusual challenge for beginner mouths. Uncured or pasteurized roe exists but is rare outside specialist shops. As a fish product it also carries the fish allergen label, so the first taste should be deliberate anyway.

How to serve it safely

Keep roe off the menu before the first birthday — on sushi, blinis, or stirred into dishes. After 12 months, if it appears, choose pasteurized varieties, serve tiny amounts on a spoon-loaded soft food rather than loose beads, and treat it as a rare garnish, not a food group. Ask your pediatrician if you want it earlier for cultural reasons.

Warning signs to watch for

Fish allergy signs apply: hives, swelling, vomiting, rarely breathing difficulty. The salt is a chronic concern; loose beads swallowed whole are not dangerous as such, but gagging is common.

When to call for help

For allergy reactions involving breathing, seek emergency care (911 in the US); milder reactions, your pediatrician. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Is roe a choking hazard like whole grapes?

No — the beads are small and soft, so they pass or gag rather than plug an airway. The reasons to wait are the salt, the curing, and the unusual texture.

Can I offer roe for omega-3s instead of fish?

Fish itself does that job with less salt and more practicality. Roe is a garnish, not a staple omega-3 strategy for babies.

What about roe in sushi my toddler grabbed?

A small taste after a year is not a crisis — offer fluids and move on. Before a year, the salt and the raw-fish company it keeps are the reasons it stays off.
