Why
Soup is a gentle way to serve chicken, soft vegetables and liquid together, and homemade versions are easy to build baby-friendly. The default product, though, is not: canned and restaurant soups are typically loaded with sodium well beyond what a baby should have, and the classic chicken-in-soup format hides real hazards — small bones, cartilage and slippery noodle strings. So the answer splits on who made it.
How to serve it safely
Simmer a homemade version with no added salt, pull the chicken fully off the bone and check it carefully for bone fragments and cartilage, and cut noodles or vegetables small and soft. Serve the broth thinned if needed, and shred the meat fine for beginners. Keep canned, packet and restaurant soups off the menu until after the first birthday.
Warning signs to watch for
There is no specific allergy signal for plain chicken soup; if it contains noodles, wheat reactions — hives, vomiting, swelling — apply as with any new wheat food. Watch that swallowing stays easy with slippery noodles.
When to call for help
If your baby is choking and cannot cry or cough, start infant choking first aid and call 911 (US) immediately. If you suspect a bone fragment was swallowed and your baby seems unwell, contact your pediatrician promptly. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Common questions
Can I give the broth alone?
Homemade, unsalted broth in small sips or as a soup base is fine from 6 months — it is food, not a milk replacement. Skip shop broth and bouillon cubes, which are salt bombs.
What if my baby swallowed a tiny bone fragment?
Small soft fragments often pass without incident, but watch for gagging, drooling, refusal to eat or vomiting and contact your pediatrician promptly — sharp fragments are exactly the reason to debone so carefully.
Is cream-based chicken soup okay too?
Homemade cream versions are fine as food from 6 months — dairy in cooking is welcome. The canned cream soups are the ones to skip early, for salt and additives more than anything else.
